In modern works, especially those with fantastic themes and flirting with timelines, there are projects that are both prequels and sequels. What are spin-offs, remakes and remasters?

• A spin-off is a plot branch from a specific work of fiction, somewhat distancing itself from its main characters and the main story. Usually the heroes are episodic characters who did not have enough screen time. What is noteworthy is that it is simultaneously not only a spin-off, but also a prequel to the story.
• A remake is a new version of an existing work. Usually, the creators of remakes adapt the technical component of the product, the plot and other details for a modern audience, they can move the location of the action and even change the gender/race of the characters, which often ends in outrage among fans of the original work of art. A good example of a remake is the film Ocean's Eleven. The black-and-white film was remade, they made a modern and interesting plot, they attracted famous actors, thanks to which they collected money at the box office, which made it possible to film a sequel and a threequel.
• Remaster is a term applied primarily to films and computer games. It implies improving the technical component of a product in order to improve its perception by the audience. For example, not long ago the famous Titanic and the classic Terminator 2: Judgment Day underwent significant modifications. The picture quality was also improved in the old Star Wars trilogy. In games, remasters are even more common than in cinema - developers often release patches that adapt the game to modern operating systems, adding effects, improved textures and resolution. According to the Oxford Dictionary, this term was first introduced in 1958, after which it began to be used in relation to the film “The Godfather Part II” (in this film there are two storylines, one of which continues the story of the original, and the other tells that happened long before the events of the first part).

Most prequels are made for the same reason many sequels are made. As with sequels, prequels are only made if the source material is successful. If a work receives great profit and love from the public, but the authors do not have the opportunity to make a sequel due to a logically completed storyline, then prequels come to the rescue.
