The painting "House with a Red Roof" was painted in 1933 in the Moscow region. One summer, in the morning, he took the dacha train to Kryukovo station to visit old acquaintances. There is a house there, the roof of which is presented to us in red, with young birch trees blooming around it. The reservoir depicted on the canvas represents a single kingdom with different popularity: green frogs basked in the sun, black snails basked and caressed each other, leeches buried themselves in the mud near the shore.

Light dragonflies fluttered just above the water, rustling their wings. There is a meadow in front of the building. Goats were grazing there, a huge snow-white rooster was walking with chickens, a peasant was mowing the grass. The artist painted sketches with pleasure without leaving the dacha with paints and an easel. He found different compositions: the same space was presented differently depending on the time of day, lighting and viewing angle. As a result, the wonderful head “Little House with a Red Roof” was born. It shows a modest Central Russian landscape, which exudes calm, tenderness and warmth.

This picture is saturated with love, for a minute it seemed to me that we live in this very village, and our house also has a red roof. Very realistically in his landscape the artist allows us to feel the whole mood of village life. Not only to be there, but also to visit other places unknown to our imagination.

Rylov Arkady Aleksandrovich is a wonderful Russian Soviet artist. His paintings have a strong emotional impact, evoking a feeling of unaccountable joy.

The life of an artist

Arkady Aleksandrovich Rylov was born in 1870 in the village of Istobensk, Oryol district. This happened on the way to Vyatka, where his parents were heading. The future artist was raised by his stepfather, a notary, who worked in Vyatka, since his own father suffered from a mental disorder. The small quiet town and the nature around it evoked poetic feelings in the child, who asked to capture them in paint.

After graduating from high school, at the age of 18 he went to St. Petersburg and entered the Central School of Technical Drawing of Baron A.L. Stieglitz, where he studied for three years. At the same time, Arkady Aleksandrovich Rylov studied at the Drawing School at the Society for the Encouragement of Artists. He apparently wanted to quickly comprehend all the technical capabilities that would help him develop as a painter. But the student is unexpectedly drafted into the army. After serving there, Rylov was accepted into the school. He dreams of studying with the brilliant innovator-experimenter A. Kuindzhi, whose name was then resounding both in Russia and abroad. His “Moonlit Night on the Dnieper” (1880) created a sensation among the public and caused controversial statements among his fellow artists. In 1894, Arkady Aleksandrovich Rylov began studying in the workshop of Arkhip Ivanovich, who was a wonderful teacher. Using his own money (he spent very little on his family), A. Kuindzhi took his students to the Crimea and abroad, and paid scholarships to the poor (remembering his own disastrous start to studies). What did training in this workshop give to Rylov? He learned to create romantic holistic images, paying attention to the effects of lighting, and tried to work as much as possible in the open air, as Arkhip Ivanovich believed that nature is the most important teacher.

In 1897, he completed his studies at the Academy, and Rylov received the title of artist. Then Arkady Alexandrovich traveled abroad, visiting Germany, France and Austria. He greets the beginning of the new century as a mature landscape artist. He wrote a lot of sketches near Vyatka and St. Petersburg and devoted two years to working on the painting “Green Noise” (1904).

This work of a young but already experienced master can now be admired in the Russian Museum.

In the foreground is a green hillock descending to a winding, incredible blue river. On it, the green crowns of white birches, old and young, tremble under strong gusts of wind. Above them, cumulus white clouds with blue shadows are running across the blue sky. Saturated color combinations. Only an old pine tree with a thick trunk stands steadily, giving balance to the composition. In the gap between the trees there is an immense distance. This achieves a dynamic solution to the space. Three white triangles can be seen on the river. Are these fishermen's boats? The viewer comes to the joy of belonging to the landscape opened for him by the painter, and he sees the beautiful moments of life.

Further work

Having noticed Rylov's teaching talents, he was invited to teach an animal painting class (1902 - 1918) at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Artists. This is how Arkady Aleksandrovich Rylov, whose biography we present, combined the work of a painter and teacher. In it, the painter created a real living corner where squirrels, monkeys, hares, and birds lived. There were even two anthills there. Isn't this interesting? "Forest Dwellers" (1910)

In the wilderness of a forest corner, where there is no one except the silent and motionless artist sitting, squirrels frolic merrily, jumping from branch to branch. Something attracted the attention of a curious animal, which is in the corner to the left. He stretched out, froze for a moment and looked closely.

A few more seconds, and the squirrel will again begin to run across the fluffy paws of old spruce trees. If we follow the direction of her gaze and mentally draw a straight line, we will see a white-breasted woodpecker with black wings, which is working hard, taking out from under the bark the larvae on the trunk of a tree that stands on a mossy carpet. The triangular composition is created by the second squirrel sitting on the branches above. The color of the canvas is extremely saturated with all shades of green and the contrasting red summer skins of cheerful animals.

After the revolution

The artist supported the power of the Soviets and was a member of the artistic association AHRR, participated in exhibitions of revolutionary artists. In memory of A. Kuindzhi, a society was created, in which Rylov was not only the founder, but also the chairman. The painter received the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR in 1935. Recognized by the authorities and the people, Arkady Aleksandrovich Rylov, whose short biography in our article is coming to an end, died in Leningrad in 1939.

The diagonal is set by a quiet ultramarine clean river. To the left are thin openwork birch branches peeking out. The first mowing took place there. Above the classic compositional triangle, which is formed by a river and a distant field, fluffy white clouds froze in a windless sky, through which azure peeks out here and there. This is a favorite Central Russian landscape that is dear to the heart and soul. Its emotional impact is great. It strengthens the love for such a simple native nature and, in general, for his small homeland. Arkady Aleksandrovich Rylov shows the hidden corners. “Field Rowan” is an essay that is taught to be written at school, but later, with age, it will lead to your own vision of the discreet beauty of the Russian expanse.

"Little House with a Red Roof" (1933)

The dominant feature of the landscape was two huge birch trees that reached the sky, standing exactly in the center of the picture, and the majestic blue summer sky with snow-white clouds, occupying two-thirds of the canvas.

Next to them, without trying to compete, a corner of a coniferous forest peeks out on the left. The abundance of all shades of green that the artist found on his palette on this sultry summer day is amazing: the greenish-yellow color of the mown meadow, the dark green of the forest, the joyful fresh green of birches, the light green of bushes and fruit trees at the foot of the forest and covering a cozy house on the other side of the canvas. Arkady Aleksandrovich Rylov sang a magnificent song to the crown of summer. Its dark, green waters, surrounded along the shore by a mysterious forest where goblins live and where the sorcerer lives, do not frighten, but fascinate. Arkady Aleksandrovich Rylov himself is a magician and sorcerer, since he found this place hidden from everyone. The lake, which occupies a third of the picture, comes close to the frame, and on the opposite shore it is overgrown with sedge and moss. You can see bare roots and the remains of whitening trunks that fell into the black waters. There is a feeling of expectation that someone should now go out to the water and sit down, thinking in sadness. The artist masterfully uses the color green, as in all his landscapes, collecting all its shades on the canvas. The picture leads to ancient Rus', where there has always been a place for a sorcerer and a miracle worker who can save from grief and sadness with his powerful knowledge.
