Formation and early career
Band members Jack Patterson, Grace Chatto and Milan Neil Amin-Smith met while studying at Jesus College, Cambridge University. By that time, Chatto was already forming a quartet with Amin-Smith. Chatto was dating Patterson at the time and he decided to record her performances. Patterson began mixing her songs with electronic music, and presenting her the fruit of her labor, Chatto stated that she liked this idea. One of their friends, Ssegawa-Ssekintu Kiwanuka, wrote lyrics for songs at that time, and together they created the track Mozart's House. And thus the idea came to them about creating a musical group. Name, Clean bandit, they took from the translation of the Russian phrase that in English language means "total fool". You were one of the best last year musical groups around the world and received a Grammy. Were you ready for this?
Grace: At that time, our band was 7 years old and we dreamed of touring and traveling, but we certainly did not expect an award. Billions of people around the world are listening different music, thousands and thousands of songs - and suddenly we get a Grammy. Finding out about it was just crazy.
Jack: Yes, it was very strange to go to this for so many years.
I know that when you lived in Moscow, you were inspired by Russian house music coming from the tents.What inspires you now?
Grace: We often heard such music on Gorbushka, and we even liked it. Now we prefer variety: classical, rock, modern music. Still, of course, travel plays an important role. Recently we were on a music tour in Japan and decided to recreate our documentary, which was filmed many years ago when we were vacationing there. Especially since Jack himself directs all our clips and videos, and it was not so difficult.
What modern musicians do you like?
Jack: I'm listening to modern jazz, I like it when there are a lot of saxophones. I guess it's because every day I do pop music myself.
Grace: We love both Disclosure and James Blake. With Disclosure, we even performed together a few years ago. It's hard to say who else you like, because there are so many different artists around, playing in a variety of styles.
Have you thought about collaborations with other musicians?
Jack: In fact, each of our tracks is a collaboration with different artists. We would like to do a joint project with musicians from Asia. It would be cool.
Grace: We also do remixes, made tracks with Gorgon City, Jess Glenn, performed with Marina & The Diamonds.
When will the track with Marina & The Diamonds be released?
Grace: We don't know as long as we're recording the vocals. I would like to process the material as soon as possible, we have a lot of accumulated tracks, and we are trying to finish everything.
I know that Jack directs your videos. How do you work? Who is responsible for what?
Jack: Grace and I are producers.
Grace: Jack shoots all our videos, and his classmates from VGIK, Dasha Novitskaya and Anna Patarakina, help with editing and other technical things. They are operators with Jack.
Describe your music in a few words.
Jack: (Laughs.) In Russian? It's complicated! Dancing, funny, melancholy and a little contrasty.
What are your plans for the near future?
Jack: Release the next album, go on tour, complete all the records and finish producing them.
Where are you going after Moscow?
Grace: We're going on a tour of America for quite some time with Duran Duran, then Asia in December.
