The art canvas "Harvest" was painted by Plastov in 1945, when our country had just celebrated the Great Victory. During the Great Patriotic War, everyone who did not go to the front had to work in the rear. And it was mostly old people, women and children. If in the cities they worked at factories and various enterprises, then in the countryside they worked in the field. It is this topic that the work of the artist is devoted to.

In the picture we see an endless wheat field where the harvest is in progress. The main characters of the picture are a gray-haired elderly man and three children, the eldest of whom was hardly twelve years old. They are presented in the foreground of the picture at the moment when they are having lunch. From early morning, they need to first mow and reap with sickles, and then collect and knit the ripened wheat into sheaves. This hard work fell on the shoulders of the older and younger generations, since after the war many did not return from the front. Most likely, those present are all from the same family, and the children are the grandchildren of this old man. Their father, probably, did not return from the war, and maybe he is still in the hospital.

For lunch, grandfather and the guys have the usual peasant food: porridge, which they scoop with wooden spoons from a small saucepan. Behind the children, cucumbers and bread lie on a towel. A fair-haired guy in a white shirt and gray pants holds an earthen jug in his hands, from which he drinks water. The old man has rye bread in one hand, and in the other he has a spoon with which he eats porridge. He has an overgrown gray beard and tousled gray hair. Tanned skin on his face and hands suggests that he had to work hard this summer under the scorching sun. An elderly man is dressed in a faded green work suit and trampled boots. An old brown coat is thrown over his shoulders. Apparently, so that the heated back does not blow while they are resting.

A girl of about ten is dressed in a dark blouse, a red skirt and a white scarf. Blonde hair is braided in two braids. And her bangs, like the hair of the boys, burned out in the sun. The red-haired boy in the yellow shirt has grown a lot of hair over the summer. Probably, adults have to work from morning to evening, and there is not enough time or energy for a haircut.

Their meal is silently watched by an obedient little dog. He patiently waits to be treated to the remnants of food.

Behind the guys is a stack of wheat. Three sickles are stuck into it, and a scythe and a rake are attached from the other side. Each of those present performs a certain work that is within his power. Grandfather has to mow, and the guys cut the ears of wheat with the help of sickles, and then they rake and tie them into sheaves.

In the background we see several stacks of wheat. People are trying to take them to the village on horse-drawn carts.

The picture makes a good impression. The golden wheat field and the harvested rich harvest inspire hope that everything in this family, and in the whole country, will be fine. Nobody will be left hungry. And soon, perhaps, the father of these guys will return home.

Harvest

Plastov in his painting Harvest depicts an old man surrounded by young children who have taken a break from work to have a bite to eat. Perhaps they are from the same family or just from the same village and the children help the adult do the mowing. The man in front of us is elderly, but he is clearly physically strong and wiser by experience; against his background, the more mobile and frisky figures of children contrast.

The artist divided the front part of the composition, as it were, into two halves, on the one hand a haystack, on the other - people. As we found out earlier, the wheat ear can refer to the symbolism of the cycle of nature, but the second half of the composition also speaks of this. We see not just the continuity of generations, but also the life cycle, which is embodied in specific people.

The old man will become obsolete, these kids will come to replace him, they will also have children and will also sow and reap, cultivate the land and create, work and create, in order to fertilize the earth with themselves and germinate again. Such is the eternal cycle, the continuous movement of existence.

In the picture, Plastov depicted a distant perspective, the landscape stretches as far as the eye can see and beyond. When you look, it seems that you can cover the whole planet with your eyes. This, in my opinion, the artist emphasizes his idea.

On the one hand, we have a particular perpetual motion, which lies in ordinary people. On the other hand, there is the all-encompassing nature of this movement, which stretches without limits and there are many such people, old people and children all over the earth. As spikelets in a haystack pressed against each other, so people press against each other, making up a whole.

When you look at such a picture, some kind of light sadness embraces. Longing from the limitations of human existence, however, and the joy of realizing the greatness of this world.

In traditional culture, the symbol of the wheat ear has always been associated with the idea of ​​eternal return, natural cycles and the timeless nature of the soul. Just as an ear of wheat falls into the ground to germinate and become something new, the entire flowing structure of the universe is being built.

During the Soviet Union, people tried to stay away from religious belief and mysticism. However, awareness and understanding of the world is practically impossible to completely take away from a person and people always comprehend the universe. All the heroes of the picture do very hard work: the boys and the girl have to work without straightening their backs, and the grandfather works hard with a scythe. Not far from the old man and children who are having dinner, there are other people who, like the main characters in the picture, are working in the field. There are large sheaves in the field, spikelets of wheat and horses are visible.

The picture evokes a whole range of feelings in the viewer. On the one hand, she radiates kindness, warmth and care, as family members work together and work together. Little children help the old man at such an early age. However, on the other hand, the viewer is very sorry for these people, because they have to do very hard work to feed themselves.

Plastov very accessible managed to convey the emotional component of the picture. The author depicts the difficult life of a typical village family, in which both "old and young" work. "Harvest" is a picture illustrating one of the hundreds of thousands of simple peasant families in Russia.

Description of the painting Harvest

When you look at this canvas, you should remember the year in which it was written. It's 1945! That is, the peaceful everyday scene shown to us takes place either in the still military 1944, or in the first post-war 1945. Yes, and the forty-fifth is conditionally peaceful: the surviving fathers and brothers have not yet returned, in August there will be a new massacre - a war in the Far East with imperialist Japan and new funerals will come to many families ...

The grandchildren of the old man look in contrast and at the same time harmoniously. They are still very young, they should play, not work in the field, but life forced them, like their grandfather, to grow and harvest bread, which is so necessary for the Motherland and rightfully, they eat their simple food in the field.

On the canvas, you can see that the wheat has already been even basted into sheaves, and in some places even stacks are already standing. They have already loaded up in sheaves. And the same part of the wheat harvest, which has yet to be taken out, is neatly folded into heaps on the field and can be seen all over the field.

But such work requires a lot of strength, so you need to have lunch. The artist depicts just such a time when poor people, peasants, decide to have a little lunch. Their lunch is not sumptuous and very simple. In one cup, food for both the girl and the grandfather. Most likely, the girl brought dinner to her grandfather. But he, realizing how poor the poor man’s lunch was and that children always want to eat, he decided to offer his granddaughter to eat too. And she did not refuse. But not only the girl eats from the same bowl, but also the boys, who, most likely, helped the old man on the field and were also very hungry. Having had a little snack, one of the boys depicted in Plastov's painting decides to drink milk. In a jug, the milk will be cool for a long time, so it will seem so invigorating to people who work in the field at such a time.

Not far from the peasants who are having lunch, a dog sits, which calmly watches how people dine. He is also hungry, but he is already accustomed to the fact that his dinner will be after the hard workers have eaten, so he tries to remain calm and wait, but he is not good at it. It can be seen that the dog is quite young, so from time to time he barks to remind those who eat that he, too, is here and waiting for his part of the food.

In order to better depict people, to which class they belong, the artist drew their clothes in detail. So, the old man is dressed in simple and unsophisticated clothes. His shoes are on his feet, since it is dangerous to walk across the field: you can also prick your feet. He has a gray beard and the same gray and thick hair, which is disheveled in different directions. He worked hard to earn at least something for his family, so he has no time to think about how he looks. But what attracts most of all on Plastov’s canvas is the peasant’s hands, large and overworked.

At the moment when the artist captured him, he simply holds a small piece of black bread, but he treats it with care, because he knows how expensive it is. In the other hand of the old man is a wooden spoon, which was usually carried with them in Russia in the hope of eating somewhere. He is wearing a blue shirt and pants. A girl sat down opposite him, so you can see that her hair is long and carefully braided into two small pigtails. She covered her head, as was customary in those days, with a scarf. She is wearing a bright red skirt and socks. She also did not come to the field barefoot, but she had shoes on her feet.

The boys in the Plast picture are dressed more simply. Both of them are in simple canvas shirts of white and yellow color, trousers are dark in color so that dust is not visible on them. Wherever you look at the picture, everywhere around the central images is a field of wheat. Everything is painted yellow, which is combined with wheat, its remnants. Therefore, people sat down to rest and have a snack under one of these sheaves, in order to somehow hide from the scorching rays of the sun. Nearby they abandoned their tools. The guys worked with sickles: first they cut, bending down, the ears of corn to the very root, and then, taking a rake, they raked everything up well so as not to miss a single spikelet. By the way, now no one works like that in the field. And then this work was very heavy. But the guys work with rakes and sickles, but the old man has a different tool: he mows wheat. She stands leaning against a haystack.

Plastov's painting perfectly shows the time that was quite recently, but which is gone forever. A bright and wonderful feeling arises in the soul when you look at the boundlessness of Russian fields and understand how beautiful the Russian land is after all.

Probably not every person in his life could directly observe the harvesting of bread and in what a difficult way this delicious product ends up on our table. Plastov's painting "Harvest", as well as "Haymaking" written in 1945, tell us about the everyday life of ordinary people, collective farmers, busy in the fields harvesting.

For these paintings about the summer season, Arkady Plastov was awarded the Stalin Prize, which at that time was simply an unattainable peak for a Soviet artist.

In the painting "Harvest", the artist depicted a short rest, during which the family has lunch. The wheat harvest is mowed and swept into large stacks. And now the long-awaited day of Victory has come, but the way of the soldiers home to their relatives is still so long. And not all of them will knock on the door of their home, where they are still waiting, no matter what.

Grandfather and grandchildren slowly eat simple peasant food, scooping thick porridge from the pan with painted wooden spoons. Cucumbers are laid out on a scarf. One of the boys drinks water from an earthenware jug, in which the water remains cool for a long time. Nearby, a yard dog sits quietly, his ears up, he patiently awaits handouts. The figure of a bearded gray-haired old man is very colorfully depicted. While working, his hair was very disheveled. He holds a small piece of rye bread in his large, overworked hands, and it is clear to the audience that he only occasionally bites off of it, trying to ensure that the guys have enough food.

Although the children are wearing light clothing, a worn brown jacket is thrown over the old man's shoulders. Perhaps he is not completely healthy and therefore is afraid of catching a cold and falling asleep. Then it will be even harder for the family to manage the household.

Plastov depicts a field stretching from edge to edge, the wheat on which is already almost all harvested and only the stubble colors it in yellow-green color. Plastov always preferred to use color and shades that most accurately characterized the theme, conveyed his attitude to the depicted event.

Next to the mop one can see the tools of labor of this peasant family. Apparently, the grandfather worked with a scythe, which he leaned against a haystack for the rest, and the boys with sickles. The picture also shows a wooden rake. Perhaps the girl was raking the spikelets with them.

Currently, the painting "Harvest" is on display at the State Tretyakov Gallery, causing bright sadness from the contemplation of the vast expanses of fields and the modest meal of the peasants after the war.
