I remember the author: Yuryev Evgeny Dmitrievich - Russian poet, composer of the late nineteenth and early twentieth - silver - centuries ... Nothing is known about him, except that he lived for twenty-nine years, of which twelve (from the age of seventeen) wrote poetry and romances.

Dispassionate, quiet, unhurried, detached from everything except the inner memory of the heart, the performance of the romance, attributed to the author of the verses, seems to be the best of all the numerous performers who want to try themselves in this masterpiece. Then the romance becomes a manifestation of something completely different - a lack of heart.

Excessive artistry, and not excessive - too, unnecessary complication of his performance with an emphasis on his vocal abilities, and not on the author's mood, deprives the romance of its own intonation and charm.

The romance “In the Moonlight” (“Ding-Ding-Ding”, “Bell”) continues the coachman theme in Russian song culture, begun by the romance “Here the daring troika rushes ...” in 1828. In general, little is known about the history of the creation of the romance, it was simply composed - and that's it.

First recorded on gramophone record July 11, 1909 Maria Alexandrovna Karinskaya(1884-1942), pop artist and performer of romances.

In May 1904, she first performed on the capital's stage in the operetta by V. Kazansky. Newspapers spoke rather flatteringly about the debutante, wrote about her effective appearance, about her strong beautiful voice (mezzo-soprano). Soon Maria Karinskaya, having left the theater, began to perform on the stage with the performance of romances.

Phantoms do not have archive cells. However, the author's performance of the romance "In the Moonlight" (also called "Bell" and "Ding-Ding-Ding") causes distrust among the listeners. From him a mile away reeks of stylization.

For tours, she even had a special wagon, which was attached to various trains. There were equipped dressing room, library, kitchen. Then the singer's carriage passed to Admiral Kolchak ... Vyaltseva did not go on tour abroad in principle. She performed only before the Russian public.

She went out to sing an encore twenty times. Her concerts lasted up to four hours. They shouted to her: “Seagull! Seagull! .. "And she tirelessly returned to the stage ... Anastasia Dmitrievna was called "The Seagull of the Russian Stage." Her romance “In the moonlight the snow is silvering” at the beginning of the last century was incredibly popular. At the Tsar's court, the singer Plevitskaya was more appreciated, but this romance performed by Vyaltseva was well known and loved by Emperor Nicholas II. The popularity of the romance was so great that it even made it an unwitting witness to a very gloomy page in our history. At that time, the first gramophone records with Vyaltseva's romances appeared (they were preserved in the Bakhrushinsky Museum). And in December 1916, as the participants in this fateful event later recalled, Grigory Efimovich Rasputin, a friend of the Royal Family, was treacherously lured to the palace of Prince Yusupov and killed there. The murderers, in order to hide their intentions, so that the screams and noise of the struggle would not be heard on the street, turned on the gramophone at full volume precisely with this romance by Anastasia Vyaltseva. Under this wonderful music, under its wondrous voice, a prayer book for the Tsar perished ...

Recently released a film by French director José Diane "Rasputin" with Gerard Depardieu in the title role. I have no complaints about the artist. He was deeply imbued with this bright Russian image (which was then bizarrely refracted in his subsequent personal fate). And yet the film on the "Russian plot" is unsuccessful, it was shot with cold, untrembling hands. But it is not by chance that this romance sounds several times in the film ...

Now the romance "In the Moonlight" is sung by Evgenia Smolyaninova. It is also in my repertoire. I performed it on the stage of the Bakhrushin Museum, like other romances by Anastasia Vyaltseva. The concert was held on a big rise, with a crowded hall. Performing the works of a great artist, being in the atmosphere of that time, among the old things that could have belonged to her, records, books, to the sounds of the piano of that era (we worked in a theater museum!), is both a joy and a responsibility. Shortly after the October Revolution, the new government declared the romance a "bourgeois relic" that hinders building a brighter future. And in Russian culture for several decades, he was forgotten.
It was only in the second half of the 1950s that the romance as a genre was "rehabilitated" and began to gradually return to Soviet listeners. The romance “In the Moonlight” continues the coachman theme in Russian song culture, begun by the romance “Here the daring troika rushes ...” in 1828, when Alexei Nikolaevich Verstovsky set to music an excerpt about the coachman from Fyodor Glinka's poem.
